AI Course for Pharmacies and Pharmacists

AI Course for Pharmacies: practical training so that owners, pharmacists and technicians use AI in community pharmacy work (counter advice, communication with patients and on social media, orders and sales data) without entering patients' health data into public tools. Tailored programmes, online or in person. Training for salaried staff can be eligible for FUNDAE funding depending on available credit and applicable requirements; owners registered as self-employed (RETA) are not covered.

AI in the pharmacy: more time for the patient at the counter

A community pharmacy has a lot of preparation work that nobody sees: advice sheets for dermocosmetics or nutrition, posters and posts, replies to emails from laboratories and distributors, internal protocols for the team and sales and order spreadsheets. Generative AI helps prepare all of it faster, so the team can give more attention to the person in front of them.

We work with your pharmacy's own cases and set the limits from day one: AI prepares drafts and summarises information, and the pharmacist checks and decides. Every piece of information about a medicine is checked in official sources such as CIMA, the medicines information centre of the Spanish Agency of Medicines (AEMPS), and patients' health data is never entered into public AI tools.

Where AI helps in the pharmacy's daily work

  • Better-prepared counter advice

AI helps prepare general information sheets on dermocosmetics, nutrition or seasonal products, in plain language for the patient; they are not individual advice. The pharmacist checks the content before it is used: for medicines, the summary of product characteristics and the package leaflet in CIMA; for other products, the labelling and its documentation.

  • Communication and social media without writer's block

Posters, social media posts, newsletters and website copy: AI gives a first draft in the pharmacy's tone, limited to institutional communication and general information about the pharmacy and its services. Promoting medicines, individual advice and therapeutic recommendations are left out. The team reviews everything before it is published.

  • Clear orders, stock and sales

With exports from the pharmacy management software, AI helps sort sales by category, spot slow-moving products and prepare the figures for conversations with laboratories and distributors, without complicated formulas.

  • Protocols and team training

Work procedures, guides for new technicians and summaries of sector news: AI drafts them from your documents, and the owner reviews and approves them.

  • Medicine queries, as support only

When a question comes up about interactions or contraindications, AI can help frame the question and point to what to look up. The answer is always checked in the summary of product characteristics, the package leaflet or CIMA, and the decision is the pharmacist's: AI does not replace professional judgement.

  • Admin tasks without losing the afternoon

Emails to suppliers, meeting minutes, document summaries and internal templates: AI gives a first draft from your documents, without patient data, and the team reviews it before sending.

Health data: what never goes into a public AI tool

Health data is a special category of personal data under Article 9 of the GDPR. The rule in the training is one: identifiable patient data (name, ID number, health card, treatment or history) is never entered into general-purpose AI tools.

We work with fictional or previously anonymised cases, so that no one can reasonably be identified. Removing the name or ID number, or adjusting a tool's privacy settings, is not enough to anonymise: the treatment, dates and circumstances can also identify a person. We practise how to prepare such cases and how to put in writing which uses are approved in your pharmacy. Using real patient data requires a legal basis, a condition under Article 9 of the GDPR for health data and, where the tool provider acts as a processor, a processing contract (Article 28). A privacy setting or an internal approval does not settle that.

This is training in good practice, not an audit or a legal opinion: to judge your pharmacy's compliance, ask your data protection adviser.

How the training works

  1. 01

    Pharmacy diagnosis

Before we start, we review the team's tasks with the owner: counter, communication, purchasing, management and internal training. We choose the cases where AI saves the most work and the ones to leave out.

  2. 02

    Hands-on sessions with your material

We work with the pharmacy's real advice sheets, posters, emails and exports, always without patient data. Every exercise leaves something the team can use the next day.

  3. 03

    Health data and GDPR

A specific block on what never goes into a public AI tool: health data is a special category of data under Article 9 of the GDPR. We cover how to prepare fictional or anonymised cases, why removing the name is not enough and how to document it.

  4. 04

    Usage guide for the team

At the end, the pharmacy has an AI usage guide with the approved cases, the limits and the pharmacist's review, so the whole team works the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI advise a patient or decide on dispensing?

No. Dispensing and pharmaceutical advice are the pharmacist's responsibility. AI is useful for preparing material, summarising information and organising data, and it can get doses, interactions or indications wrong, so every piece of information about a medicine is checked in the summary of product characteristics, the package leaflet or the AEMPS CIMA database before it is used. In the training we practise that check.

What about patients' health data?

Health data is a special category of personal data under Article 9 of the GDPR. The rule in the training is simple: identifiable patient data is never entered into public AI tools. We cover how to prepare fictional or anonymised cases, why removing the name is not enough and how to document their use.

Which cases does the training cover?

The most common ones: general information sheets for the counter, institutional posters and social media posts, information newsletters, replies to emails from laboratories and distributors, analysis of sales and order exports, and internal procedures for the team. We choose them with the owner depending on the type of pharmacy. Communication is limited to institutional and general information; it does not include promoting medicines, individual advice or therapeutic recommendations.

Does the team need technical knowledge?

No. The training is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with no technical background. We work with general-purpose tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini and focus on judgement in their use. Anyone who has tried ChatGPT already has enough of a base.

Can the course be funded through FUNDAE?

Yes, depending on the pharmacy's available credit and the applicable requirements. IAescola is a registered training provider (code 9900033425) and a FUNDAE organising entity, and takes care of the notifications and documentation: start and end notifications to FUNDAE and attendance records. The pharmacy applies the rebate to its contributions and keeps the supporting documentation. The funding covers training for salaried staff who meet the requirements; it does not cover the owner's participation if the owner is registered as self-employed (RETA).

How is the course organised?

The training is tailored: an introductory session for the whole team, an applied programme over several sessions with the pharmacy's own cases, or ongoing support to bring AI into daily work. First we talk with no commitment and agree the format and schedule with you, online or in person in Catalonia.

Does it give continuing education credits?

No. The course does not award continuing education credits or healthcare accreditation: you receive an IAescola certificate of participation.

How much does the course cost for a pharmacy?

It is quoted to fit the number of people, the format and the pharmacy's own cases, so we do not publish a fixed rate. We send a proposal after a no-commitment conversation, with FUNDAE funding explained if the pharmacy can apply it.

Tell us what your pharmacy needs

No commitment. We'll explain what AI can and can't do for your pharmacy team, with concrete cases.

Request a free 15-min diagnostic call

No commitment. We reply within one working day.
